On July 31, Beyoncé will be releasing her new visual album, Black Is King to Disney+. It is based on the music of The Lion King: The Gift.
What We Know:
- Beyoncé has written, directed and executive produced the project herself. The release date will mark the one-year anniversary of the live action release of The Lion King. The visual will celebrate Black resilience and culture. A teaser of the visual can be seen on her website.
- According to Disney and Beyoncé’s company, Parkwood Entertainment, “The visual album from Beyoncé reimagines the lessons of The Lion King for today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns.” The project has been in production for one year and will feature the album’s artists as well as special appearances.
- The album will honor the voyages of Black families throughout time and will tell the story of a young king’s journey through betrayal, love and self-identity. Throughout the story, the young king earns his virtues needed to reclaim his “home and throne”.
- The press release states, “These timeless lessons are revealed and reflected through Black voices of today, now sitting in their own power. Black Is King is an affirmation of a grand purpose, with lush visuals that celebrate Black resilience and culture. The film highlights the beauty of tradition and Black excellence.”
Beyoncé made the announcement after the release of her new single, “Black Parade” on Juneteenth. Proceeds from the song will benefit Black-owned small businesses in need. She says, “Black excellence is a form of protest. Black joy is your right”.
