One of Three Officers in Murder of Breonna Taylor Officially Fired

Posted on June 23, 2020 by Tiffanie Lanelle

One of the three Louisville officers responsible for Breonna Taylor’s death has officially been terminated.

What We Know:

  • Brett Hankison has officially been terminated from the LMPD by Chief Robert Schroeder.  The other two officers, Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and officer Myles Cosgrove, remain on administrative paid leave.
  • Hankison has 10 days to appeal the decision to the Police Merit Board.  He nor his attorneys have provided a statement in response to the termination as of the time this article was written.
  • Sam Aguiar, an attorney for Taylor’s family, stated the decision as “another good, small step.” He continued with the clarification however that satisfaction won’t come “until rightful charges are brought against him, until charges are brought against everyone responsible for Breonna’s death.”
  • Hankison, Mattingly, and Cosgrove shot and killed Taylor just before 1 AM on March 13th.  None of the officers have been charged or arrested for Taylor’s death.
  • Protests have been occurring nationwide over Taylor’s death along with the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, and countless other Black lives lost without justice provided.  In Taylor’s case thus far, ‘No-Knock’ raids have been banned and one of three officers fired…but not arrested.

Updates on this story will be provided as they are available.
