What We Know:

  • Patrick Hutchinson, a black man from the UK, went viral after an image of him carrying an injured white man during a Black Lives Matter protest in London on Saturday was posted. Not knowing whether or not the man was a counter-protester, Hutchinson followed his instincts to protect the man from the protesters.
  • Hutchinson attended his first Black Lives Matter protest because he was supportive of the cause and wanted to break down the race barriers for equality.
  • “I want to see equality for everybody,” Hutchinson said. “I am a father, a grandfather and I would love to see my young children, my young grandchildren, my nieces, my nephews have a better world than I have lived in. The world I live in has been better than my grandparents and my parents and hopefully, we can continue until we have total equality for everyone.”

“My real focus was on avoiding a catastrophe, all of a sudden the narrative changes into ‘Black Lives Matters, Youngsters Kill Protesters.’ That was the message we were trying to avoid.” – Patrick Hutchinson

  • Hutchinson’s life-changing moment began during the protest when he noticed the man lying on a staircase in a fetal position surrounded by protesters. Hutchinson and his friends sprung into action by creating a barrier around Hutchinson while he carried the man over his shoulders.
  • “I am carrying him, my friends are protecting myself and the man on my shoulder,” he said in an interview with CNN. He was still receiving blows, you can feel people trying to hit him. There were people trying to protect him at the same time carried him over to the police and I said here you are. One of them said ‘thank you, you did a good thing there.'”
  • Protests have erupted all over the world calling for police reform and justice for all of the black people who died at the hands of police like George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery.

So far, the white man who was saved by Hutchinson hasn’t been identified.
