George Floyd’s daughter, Gianna Floyd, has been offered a full scholarship to Texas Southern University.

- Gianna Floyd, 6, daughter of George Floyd, a man killed by a Minnesota white cop, has been offered a full scholarship to Texas Southern University. The scholarship is in honor of her father, who was born in North Carolina but lived most of his life in Houston, Texas, and graduated from Jack Yates High School.
- The University made the announcement in a press release saying, “The Board of Regents of Texas Southern University (TSU) honors the memory of George Floyd on the day that he is laid to eternal rest,” the announcement reads. “Mr. Floyd was a lifelong citizen of the Third Ward and a revered graduate of Jack Yates High School.”
- “The Board, in conjunction with the TSU Foundation Board, has approved a fund to provide a full scholarship for Floyd’s beloved daughter, Gianna,” the post continues. “TSU’s executive and academic staff will prepare a place for Miss Floyd if she wishes to attend the university.”
- “This Board is committed to education and understands that a college degree is one of many powerful steps toward a productive and successful life,” Albert H. Myres, chair of the Board of Regents, said. “We know that this gesture cannot take the place of her dad’s loving presence, but we hope that it will contribute to easing her journey through life.”
- Chairman of the TSU Foundation, Gerald Smith said that the scholarship will be privately-funded, in the press release.
- “We know the value of an education in the pursuit of solutions and general progress,” Smith said. “We look forward to embracing her into the TSU family.”
- Gianna Floyd has been seen with her mother, Roxie Washington, at a press conference on June 2, where Washington expressed the pain they’ve felt after the death of Floyd. They were also seen during an interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America.
So far, there hasn’t been a statement from any of the family members regarding the scholarship.
