Naomi Campbell makes history as her own photographer for Essence magazine 50th anniversary issue.

  • Naomi Campbell took matters into her own hands when she could no longer have the traditional photoshoot for the cover of ESSENCE magazine becuse of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The model superstar did her own hair, makeup, and styling then turned the camera on herself to create a historical masterpiece, the first-ever ESSENCE magazine cover shot entirely on an iPhone.

  • It would also mark the first time in the brand’s 50-year history that a cover star was her own photographer.
  • Campbell stated “It was a very special honor and unusual experience for me to be able to shoot and style my own cover for ESSENCE’s 50th anniversary issue”.
  • This is a moment Campbell says she will never forget as she remains hopeful and leans into the resilience that brought us all this far to carry us ahead.
  • “While it was a sad reminder for me of all the people in media and production who are not able to work due to coronavirus, it also brought me hope and encourgement to know that our people and our infrastructures are resilient.”

  • The Golden Anniversary issue takes a look at some of the joys, pains, laughter, triumphs, and stories that have impacted the Black community over the past half a century, including the coronavirus and it’s effects on the lives of Black women.
