Kobe’s Memorial Service Date and Location Announced

A public memorial service for Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and all those among the fallen will be held on the morning of Feb. 24th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Times.

What We Know:

  • The significance behind the chosen date reflects the late basketball player’s jersey number worn throughout most his career, No. 24 and Gianna Bryant’s jersey, No. 2, which was retired by Harbor Day School in Corona Del Mar, California on Thursday.
  • The planned date for the Kobe and Gianna memorial was recently finalized by the city of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Department and the LA Clippers, who have a game at the Staples Center that evening.
  • After a period of silence, 911 calls were finally released earlier this week from the aftermath of January 26th. More details have come out in the past weeks that poor weather conditions caused the Island Express aircraft to have a fatal landing. A National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) probe confirms it was one of the principal causes of the accident at this point.

  • A week after Vanessa Bryant issued a statement on Kobe and Gigi’s passing on Instagram, she posted an open invite for the memorial service on Friday.

The NTSB is expected to release a preliminary report of its investigation as early as this week.
