On Wednesday’s episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg opened up with saying although she was remorseful of Rush Limbaugh’s announcement of advanced lung cancer, she admitted that she didn’t feel that he deserved the nation’s highest civilian honor.
What We Know:
- Goldberg said “you know, I am very sorry that Rush is ill, because you never want to wish bad stuff on people”. She continued, “He has stage 4 cancer. But I’m sorry, I thought that the Medal of Freedom was supposed to go to people who actually did stuff.”
- Goldberg listed the name of others she felt deserved the award which included Representative Elijah Cummings, who tragically passed away last October. She said, “I didn’t understand. You’ve got a Tuskegee Airman sitting there, and if you’re going to give the Medal of Freedom to someone who actually has made differences in the country and has done all kinds of stuff, how about giving it to Elijah Cummings’ wife as a thank you to all of his service?”
- Megan McCain tried to explain why Limbaugh’s award was a way for Trump to show appreciation to his political party. She also added that Limbaugh had a very successful radio career where he had 30 million listeners a day, while their own show only garners 3 million.
- Although Limbaugh has had a successful career, Goldberg wasn’t going to allow his accomplishments to take away what he has said and how inadequate he made others feel. Sunny Hostin also added why many Black Americans found Limbaugh’s medal insulting. “I don’t think it was lost on the Black community that he gave that honor to Rush Limbaugh during Black History Month, sitting next to a Tuskegee Airman, on Rosa Parks Day…Rush Limbaugh was a longtime birther during the Obama administration.”
- Later in the show, McCain agreed that Limbaugh has “said a lot of awful things”.
Co-Host Joy Behar mentioned in the show that it is ironic that he received his award during Black History Month since the radio has spent a lot of time during Obama’s presidential term calling him “Barack the Magic Negro.” Check out the clip below.
