Spotify Removing R. Kelly from Playlists

Spotify is removing R. Kelly‘s music from its algorithmic and curated playlists under its new hate content and hateful conduct policy.

What we know:

  • The music-streaming service told Billboard that, in addition to removing Kelly’s songs from Spotify-operated playlists, it would no longer promote the R&B artist’s music.
  • His music will still be available on the service, but Spotify will not actively promote it.
  • Spotify does not censor content because of an artist’s or creator’s behavior, but editorial and programming decisions must reflect the values of the brand
  • Kelly has been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct and assault
  • The R&B artist has denied the allegations. A representative for Kelly told BuzzFeed in a statement last year that the accusations were an attempt to “lynch” the singer.
  • The New York Times also reported that a Spotify representative confirmed that XXXtentacion’s music was also being removed from the playlists.
