*The fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” premieres on April 4, and we caught up with the remarkable Sonequa Martin-Green to discuss her character’s transformative journey.
The series finale finds Captain Michael Burnham (Martin-Green) “and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well … dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it,” per the official synopsis.
During our conversation with Martin-Green, we explore her emotional journey as she reflects on the final season.
“I feel grateful. I feel grateful that we were able to tell the story that we did over the course of the entire show, and then especially how we ended,” Martin-Green shared with EUR exclusively. “I think that people will be moved. I think they’ll be touched, I think they’ll be satisfied, and I think that they will be left with hope. It’ll be the sort of final fragrance that they take in on the way out.”
Martin-Green also provided insight into her character’s evolution throughout the series and teased what fans can expect in the upcoming season. Watch the official Season 5 trailer below.
“I love the evolution of Burnham. This is the journey of a girl to a woman, and I mean that in so many ways,” Martin-Green told us.
“This is someone who went from needing absolution, to being mature enough to give it. This is someone who went from having an identity crisis, to knowing exactly who she is and what she’s here to do, and how she can help others,” Martin-Green continued.
“It’s like she learned. She learned that balance and then was able to facilitate it and dig it out of others as well. So yeah, we end with a woman, which I really love.”
From the trials and triumphs of navigating the uncharted territories of space to the profound impact of Burnham’s evolution, our candid conversation with the actress offers an illuminating exploration of the series’ climactic chapter and Martin-Green’s enduring legacy within the iconic “Star Trek” universe.
