Search no further, the Leimert Park Jazz Festival presents Sunday Jazz at Ora (formerly Hot & Cool Café) 4331 Degnan Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA. 90008.
Doors open at 3:30 p.m., Host band performs 4-5:00 p.m. This is followed by an Open Jazz Jam from 5-6 p.m. Admission is $10.
Sunday Jazz at Ora is located in the heart, the cultural hub of the African American community, Leimert Park Village.
An enthusiastic multicultural crowd of jazz aficionados filled up the intimate space of Ora on Sunday, February 25, for the second installment of Sunday Jazz at Ora. A new jazz audience along with veteran supporters gathered to hear the Chris Powe Quartet.
The tight band consisted of Chris Powe-saxophone, Corrick McCullough on keyboard, Isaac Green-bass, and Shaddy keeping time on drums. The band had the captivated crowd bopping and swaying to their soundtrack of jazz standards which featured the selections “J Mack,” “Barracuda,” “Blue Daniel,” a beautiful ballad “Easy to Remember.”
The Negro National Anthem soared to new heights during their up-tempo jazz arrangement of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” They concluded their first set with “Shortie’s Portion.”
Diane Robertson, executive producer of the Leimert Park Jazz Festival stated “The jam session musicians will create a pipeline for the ‘emerging artist’ set at the Leimert Park Jazz Festival, scheduled for Saturday, August 31, 2024!
The future of jazz is in good hands as witnessed by the talents of Saafir Che Tafari who sat in on keyboards during the Open Jazz Jam. Yo Yotaka sat in on drums to the delight of all in attendance. These two talented musicians play like seasoned veterans, even though they are only fourteen years old. Keep an eye and your ears open for these young musicians to continue to showcase their musicianship in the future.
Ora is a newly renovated and refined community space owned by husband-and-wife team Tony Jolly and Tina Amin.
The Chris Powe Quartet kicked off the series on Sunday, January 28. You can catch the quartet on Sunday, March 24, and Sunday, April 28.
Veritus Miller’s Truth Troup is scheduled to perform on Sunday, May 26, Sunday, June 23, Sunday, July 28, and Sunday, August 25.
Jonathan Pinson takes over on Sunday, September 22, Sunday, October 27, November 24, and December 22.
Come through and groove on a Sunday afternoon. This will be a perfect time to hear an amazing lineup of talented musicians on the fourth Sunday of the month. Bring your instrument to participate in the Open Jazz Jam.
