*On Thursday, September 21, the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles came alive with the vibrant energy of the music industry’s most influential figures at the third annual Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) Gala.
This star-studded event, presented by Live Nation and hosted by entertainment & lifestyle specialist Kenny Burns, brought together musicians, executives, and advocates who have made outstanding contributions to the industry and championed equality within the black community.
The 2023 BMAC Gala was an evening of recognition and celebration, honoring individuals and organizations that have significantly impacted the world of music and beyond.
As guests gathered for this prestigious occasion, they witnessed the power of unity and collective action in addressing systemic racism and advancing social justice in the music business.
“My parents always introduced me to people that used their platform for things other than themselves, whether it be Muhammad Ali or Rubi Dee… if you’re an artist do your work, but also speak to something that you care about,” said Keke Palmer; Emmy Award-winning Actress.
The honorees of the evening represented a diverse range of talent and leadership within the industry:
- Clarence Avant Trailblazer Award: Jermaine Dupri and Sylvia Rhone
- Social Impact Award: Keke Palmer; Dr. Menna Demessie, and Jesse Collins
- Change Agent Award: Jason Flom and Trae tha Truth
- 365 Award: Tariq Cherif and Matt Zingler
- Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award: Lizzo
By recognizing and celebrating the achievements of these remarkable honorees, the gala showcases the importance of equity within the music industry. The event was also a poignant occasion to pay tribute to the late Clarence Avant, an industry legend and BMAC Advisory Board member.
His contributions to the music industry and commitment to change are celebrated and cherished by the BMAC community.
“Clarence Avant is the reason why many of us, if not everybody in this room, is here. It was his courage and wisdom that kicked down those doors so that we could walk through them,” said Prophet, Co-Founder of BMAC.
As the music industry continues to evolve, the Black Music Action Coalition exemplifies the power of music that transcends boundaries.
The BMAC Gala left attendees inspired and motivated to continue their individual journeys toward a more inclusive entertainment industry.
