*An incident at a Mexican beach where two people were struck and killed by lightning was captured on video.
According to TMZ, the incident took place on Michoacán’s Pacific coast Monday, during extreme weather conditions. In the video, someone is seen packing up an umbrella, just before being struck by lightning.
The lightning bolt travels along the sand to the other person – causing both to collapse. People nearby are heard screaming.
The victims were a man and a woman, who was a tourist. The woman died at the scene, according to Spanish outlet MARCA. After receiving treatment at the hospital, the man, a local vendor, died.
The odds of being hit by lightning are about 1 in 15,300, according to TMZ.
On a global scale, the average number of people struck by lightning is 2,000 per year, with 10% of those struck dying and 90% suffering long-term effects like seizures and memory loss, per TMZ.
