*Chris Rock and Diplo were among the thousands of attendees at the Burning Man festival in Nevada who were stranded after torrential rains shut the event down three days early.
Burning Man takes place annually in the Black Rock Desert, about 100 miles north of Reno. Heavy rains poured down on festival attendees this year — killing one person. As a result of the extreme weather, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office advised festivalgoers to “shelter in place” rather than attempt to leave the event. The sheriff’s office announced in a Facebook statement to “avoid traveling to the area; you will be turned around. All event access is closed.”
On his Instagram stories, Rock showed thick mud encasing the area after hours of rain. He was ultimately rescued by a fan after walking 6 miles in the messy muddy storm. Diplo shared a video on social media explaining that they had to hitch a ride with an attendee.
“A fan offered Chris Rock and I a ride out of Burning Man in the back of a pickup,” Diplo wrote in an Instagram video of Rock and several people sitting in the back of a truck. “After walking six miles through the mud… all Chris could think about was a f—ing cold brew.”

As Urban Hollywood 411 reports, Rock explained in a now-expired IG Story the disastrous conditions at his Burning Man campsite.
“From what I understand, because of the flooding, the port-o-potties reportedly can’t be emptied. And because the gates are closed, people can’t get in to fill generators or deliver supplies,” he captioned the post according to SFgate.com.
As the rain poured down on Friday (Sept. 1), Burning Man noted in a post on X (formally Twitter) that vehicle access to the festival was closed and the local airport shut down.
“For anyone in BRC, help each other stay safe. The gate and airport in and out of Black Rock City remain closed. Ingress and egress are halted for the time being. Stay prepared for adverse weather conditions continuing through the night and into Saturday,” the post read.
A statement on the festival website Saturday said organizers were “deploying buses to Gerlach to take people to Reno.”
“This is not likely a 24-hour operation at this time,” the statement read.
According to NBC News, the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office said one person died “during this rain event.”
