*An arrest has been made in the fatal stabbing of O’Shae Sibley, a gay man who was killed last month after dancing to a Beyoncé song in Brooklyn.
As TMZ reports, the NYPD announced over the weekend that an unidentified teenager is in custody and charged with murder, “which NYPD says is being prosecuted as a hate crime,” the outlet writes.
The 17-year-old suspect reportedly turned himself in to authorities and was charged with second-degree murder. EUR reported previously that Sibley, 28, was with friends when he was killed at a Brooklyn gas station last month in a vicious homophobic attack, according to People.
Sibley, a professional dancer, was voguing to a Beyoncé song when several men approached the group and shouted gay slurs. He was stabbed after the confrontation became hostile.
One of the victim’s friends, Otis Pena, was filming the group’s night out for a Facebook Live post when the attack occurred.
O’Shae Sibley was stabbed to death for voguing at a gas station. Someone killed him for dancing because they hated witnessing his joy and comfort with who he was as a human being- a gay Black man. “They murdered him because he’s gay, because he stood up for his friends,” Pena said in a Facebook video.
Beyoncé paid tribute to Sibley on her official website, writing: “REST IN POWER O’SHAE SIBLEY.”
“The Ailey organization mourns the tragic death of O’Shae Sibley, following an attack outside of a Brooklyn gas station on Saturday night,” the Alvin Ailey American Dance Foundation’s Ailey Extension, said in a statement days after Sibley’s fatal stabbing. “O’Shae was a cherished and devoted Ailey Extension student. He had incredible energy in the studio and was loved by instructors and fellow classmates.”
“Heartbroken and enraged to learn about O’Shae Sibley’s death this weekend in New York. Despite homophobes’ best efforts, gay joy is not crime,” openly gay New York State Senator Brad Hoylman-Signal tweeted. “Hate-fueled attacks are.”

GLAAD also released a statement saying: “No one should have to fear for their safety just for being themselves. Politicians spewing lies and proposing policies filled with disinformation, and media repeating their false and dangerous rhetoric unchallenged, are creating an incredibly hostile environment that endangers all LGBTQ people and all queer people of color.”
