The Eastern and Oriental Express, a luxurious high-end passenger train, is making a comeback in Southeast Asia after a four-year hiatus. According to Condé Nast Traveler, the train will recommence its operations in February 2024, promising an indulgent experience for travelers with its opulence and timeless allure.
The temporary suspension of services in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic allowed for significant renovations with interior designers working diligently to refresh the 15 hunter-green carriages. The train now boasts a variety of alluring features, including restaurant cars, an open-air observation car, a piano bar car and eight luxurious sleeping cars.
Belmond, the luxury travel company overseeing the Eastern and Oriental Express, also unveiled two new captivating routes in Southeast Asia. Once back in service, passengers will have the opportunity to embark on two seasonal, three-night journeys, commencing from Singapore.
Essence of Malaysia
The Essence of Malaysia route, available from February through November, promises a captivating adventure. The journey goes through Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Penang, with several exciting excursions along the way. Passengers can partake in a 25-minute boat ride to Pulau Payar Marine Park, where they can indulge in picnicking and snorkeling amidst the picturesque surroundings.
Wild Malaysia
From March to October, the Wild Malaysia route takes travelers on a journey through the country’s lush jungle wilderness. The itinerary offers a diverse range of excursions.
Passengers will have ample opportunities to relax and savor exquisite fine-dining meals. They also will immerse themselves in the region’s rich culture through encounters with musicians, storytellers and artisans. The carriages, available in three styles: Pullman, State, and Presidential. Each boasts air conditioning and private bathrooms. They also are adorned with elegant cherry wood paneling and a tasteful red and blue color palette.
European Experience with Eastern and Oriental Express
