*“Alonzo is an executive in an up and coming…sneaker company,” said Tristan Mack Wilds (The Wire, Red Tails) about his role in the sports drama “Swagger,” inspired by NBA Kevin Durant’s experiences in the world of youth basketball, which launched its second season June 23, 2023, on Apple TV+. “I have friends in similar business situations that have that drive. I have the same drive in my career.”
“Swagger” is created by director Reggie Rock Bythewood, who also serves as showrunner. The Apple TV+ original weekly drama follows high school seniors Jace, Phil, Nick, Musa, Drew, and Royale called the “swagger players” by athletic director Emory Lawson at the college they selected to attend. Because of the swagger of players, the college’s athletic department gets the attention of the industry and in particular Alonzo Powers (Tristan Wilds) from Gladiator Sneakers. As dramas go, with fame comes trouble.
“It deals with being a black boy in America,” Tristan said about the drama.
When asked about his reaction to a second season of “Swagger” Mack said he was happy because, “I think telling a story like that is hard to do in 10 episodes. It shows the different levels of …reaching the NBA.”
“Swagger” also stars O’Shea Jackson, Jr., Isaiah Hill, Sinelle Azoroh, Quvenzhane Wallis, Caleed Harris, Tessa Ferrer, James Bingham, Solomon Irama, Ozie Nzeribe, Jason Rivera, Christina Jackson, and Sean Baker from season one. New to season two are Orlando Jones and Shannon Brown. It is executive produced by Reggie Bythewood, Kevin Durant, Brian Grazer, James Seidman (Imagine Television Studios), Francie Calfo and Joy Kecken, and Rich Kleiman. “Swagger” was produced at several locations that included Imagine Television Studios and CBS Studios.
When I asked about his music skills, as to which came first, he said, “I was acting first on ‘The Wire’ and 90210. Music was something I was always doing…always writing music.”
Tristan Mack Wilds, a Grammy-nominated Urban singer/songwriter, debuted with “New York: A Love Story” album on Roc Nation and followed that up with his sophomore album “After Hours” in 2017 on his own label The Ninety-Five Person/Empire. Aside from acting and singing/songwriting Wilds is also a music producer. “Simple Things” is his latest single release.
His acting credits also include George Lucas’ Red Tails, Spike Lee’s “Miracle Boys” (TeenNick), “Cold Case,” “Law & Order,” and The Secret Life of Bees. He made his Broadway debut with Luke James in the production of “Thoughts of a Colored Man” in 2021. “Swagger” will air a new episode every week until August 11th. www.ViacomCBS.com www.Apple.com
