Vivica A. Fox’s breakthrough came in 1996 by way of roles in two films: as Francesca “Frankie” Sutton in the heist thriller film Set It Off and as Jasmine Dubrow in the science fiction film, Independence Day.
In 2016, Fox reprised her role as Dubrow in the latter’s sequel Independence Day: Resurgence.
In a recent interview with The A.V. Club, Fox discussed her feelings regarding the sequel.
“I just didn’t feel like it was good and lived up to the first one,” Fox said in an interview with The A.V. Club. “I really feel we missed out by not bringing Will Smith [back].”
The original, which saw Fox star alongside Will Smith, grossed $817.4 million against a budget of $75 million, making it the highest-grossing film of 1996. The sequel which garnered dismal reviews, grossed $389.7 million worldwide at the box office against its $165 million budget.
“We got most of the original cast but I think the one true link that was missing to the success of Independence Day 2 was that we missed that Will Smith wasn’t there,” Fox said.
During the interview, Fox revealed she speculated about the fan response to Smith’s absence at the film’s premiere.
“And sure enough on Twitter, they blew me up,” Fox said.
