*Celebrate Juneteenth weekend at the Weusi Art Exhibition at Art Share LA in the downtown Arts District. The Weusi Exhibit explores healing arts, music, dance, poetry, video and live drama to address the legacy of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the quest for total liberation.
Weusi is the Swahili word for “black” and certainly, Black excellence will be celebrated! Space is limited, and the event is free but registration is required.
The three-day celebration kicks off with an opening night ceremony on Friday, June 16th at 6:00 pm. The celebrity Red Carpet from 6-7pm is produced by “Perceptive by Princess Va’Shion.” Complimentary soul food will be served.
Keynote speakers include Dr. Melina Abdullah from Black Lives Matter LA and Dr. Curley Bonds from the Department of Mental Health.
Free Pan African flags, bracelets, and other giveaways are sponsored by the LA County Department of Mental Health. LA Art Share is located at 801 East 4th Place Los Angeles, CA 90013.
Saturday, June 17th presents physician-musician-philosopher Dr. Chill, who will share insights on how to stay well. Additionally, Dr. Chill is also the father of the singing sensation Jhene Aiko.
Crowds can experience a thrilling “Friendship Dance” by the Yankuititl Aztec dancers. A special feature is a healing workshop on Intergenerational Trauma facilitated by Kevin R. Collins. Mr. Collins is a Community Health Worker at LA County Dept. of Mental Health.
Other presentations will be made by Black & African Heritage Underserved Cultural Communities (BAHUSCC).
The Weusi closing event on Sunday includes a matinee screening of film excerpts about Malcolm X and Marcus Garvey, presented by filmmakers Ben Caldwell and Shaka Shatori.
The Weusi Multi-Media Arts Exhibit is produced by Queen Nina Womack of Transmedia 360 and Let’s Be Whole. It’s sponsored by the LA County Department of Mental Health, CalMHSA, Take Action LA, and more.
