Ten-plus years of primary and secondary education can definitely leave young adults burnt out and exhausted. To combat this seemingly inevitable burnout, more high school graduates are embarking on gap years. A year-long break to claim their freedom and independence, gap years dedicated to backpacking internationally have grown in popularity.
With more young adult travelers seeking to explore the world before spending four years studying in libraries, gap years filled with backpacking adventures are shifting the focus of youth. However, there are a lot of factors to consider when planning this 12-month international excursion, such as the best location to explore.
Among the many options, Slovenia stands out as the best destination, according to travel blogger Monica Stott.
Backpacking Through Slovenia
Stott crowned Slovenia as her favorite destination for backpacking gap year students for a number of reasons. First off, the country is beautiful. Sweeping meadows, incredible green pastures, and snow-capped mountains make the Central European country a top pick for backpackers.
“Slovenia is one of the most affordable destinations I’ve visited as a backpacker,” she said. “It’s also one of the most underrated destinations in Europe.”
Slovenia has been flying under most travel radars for a long time. Stott says it’s a perfect pick for backpackers since everything is so inexpensive and there’s a lot of terrain to explore. A one-night stay in a hotel there costs as low as 18 euros, while a three-course meal for two would only run 36 euros.
Postpone Life, See The World
The Gap Year Association estimates approximately 40,000 to 60,000 students take a gap year each year, according to U.S. News. While there is no factual data on the number of students backpacking internationally, it’s no secret some are tying up their hiking boots and hitting the trail worldwide.
Slovenia isn’t the only place on Stott’s list. Iceland and New Zealand both made the list for their safe living conditions, friendly locals, and Working Holiday Visa for students from Great Britain. Australia, a long favorite for backpackers, also has this visa option. Other countries like Bali, Portugal, and Ireland also made the list.
