Atlanta enjoys a permanent place in The Culture, which it’s held for quite some time. From museums to murals of Black figures, HBCUs and many Black-owned businesses, you’ll see why some call it “The Black Mecca.”
There are many tour companies based there, and they all have their strengths. But if you’re looking to learn how Black people shaped this special city (and how they continue to do so), consider Atlanta’s Black History and Civil Rights Tour.
The Tour Has Great Reviews
Atlanta’s Black History and Civil Rights Tour is one of the winners of the 2023 Viator Experience Awards.
Viator, an affiliate of Tripadvisor, issues awards based on the reviews of the travel community. The tour currently has five stars and 664 reviews.
“Don’t leave Atlanta without booking this tour!” wrote one Viator user. Numerous others praised the guide, Jeff, who is affable and well-versed in Black history.
“The tour guide was very informative,” said somebody else. “He gave everyone time to take pictures of everything. I’m definitely going to come back to ATL again to take more tours. I wish I could have given him a bigger tip—he was awesome.”
The Tour Covers Past and Present Atlanta
The tour is given in an air-conditioned van and lasts four hours, but you’ll enjoy it so much that the time will fly.
After being picked up at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, you’ll be taken to several sites. Some are enjoyed from the vehicle, but you’ll have chances to get out of the van as well.
After passing Mercedes Benz Stadium and the Georgia State Capitol, the Black history portion of the tour kicks in. You’ll learn about baseball legend Hank Aaron, stop for photos at Tyler Perry studios, and pass through historically Black neighborhoods.
You’ll see the city’s celebrated HBCUs like Clark, Morehouse and Spelman. Additional stops include The King Center and the Municipal Market, with plenty of Black and ethnic food stalls.
Afterward, the guide will drop you off where you started.
