*Gayle King says it is “troubling” that the public is “downplaying” Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s paparazzi chase in New York City last week.
As we reported previously, Meghan and Harry were involved in a “near catastrophic car chase’ with paparazzi in New York City last night after leaving the Woman of Vision Awards. The Duchess of Sussex was an honoree at this year’s Ms. Foundation 2023 Women of Vision Awards: Celebrating Generations of Progress & Power.
After leaving the awards show, the royal couple, and Meg’s mom Doria who accompanied them to the event, were involved in a “near catastrophic car chase” with paparazzi, a spokesperson for Meghan and Harry confirmed Wednesday, NBC News reports.
“Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms. Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi,” a rep for Harry and Meghan said in a statement to Page Six.
“This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians, and two NYPD officers. While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety,” the rep added.
Nearly 12 paparazzi allegedly followed the group in an SUV. Harry reportedly recorded the chase on his cellphone as did the security, Meaww reports.
Many Megan and Harry haters were quick to doubt that a 2-hour paparazzi chase could even be possible in a busy city like NYC. “The View’s” Whoopi Goldberg said, “I think people in New York know if it was possible to have car chases in New York, we’d all make it to the theater on time.”
King spoke out after Goldberg added her voice to the chorus of Megan and Harry’s critics.
“I think it was a very unfortunate incident,” King told Page Six at the 148th Preakness Stakes in Baltimore on May 12. “It’s troubling to me that anybody would try to downplay what that would mean to them. That’s very troubling to me.”
King added, “I’m just really sorry it happened and very sorry they had to go through it. Everybody can have all of their opinions but I always go back to, ‘How did they feel in that moment?’”
