*In 2015, Barack Obama commuted the life sentence of former cocaine dealer Alton Mills. He is now charged with three counts of attempted murder.
Mills, 54, is accused of shooting a woman on a Chicago expressway in a road rage incident last week, leaving her brain dead, the Daily Mail reports. In 1994, he received an automatic life sentence for trafficking cocaine under the third strike rule despite not serving any prison time for two prior felony convictions. In 2020, he was one of 1,927 convicts who had their sentences commuted by former President Obama.
As Newsweek reports, in Obama’s letter to Mills he wrote, “I believe in your ability to prove the doubters wrong and change your life for the better. So good luck, and Godspeed.”
On May 14, Mills’ SUV was parked at a red light when a car containing three friends pulled up behind him. The group had just left a nightclub in south suburban Chicago. After the light turned green, Mills did not move. The driver of the other vehicle passed him without honking or making a big fuss about it but Mills sped up to catch the car.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Kathryn Morrissey, he lowered the window and fired three shots from the driver’s side. One of the bullets struck a woman asleep in the car’s back seat. According to the Daily Mail, she is unlikely to recover from the severe head injuries she sustained. The shooting occurred near the I-57 on-ramp in Posen, Illinois.
Police were called after the driver pulled over at a Chicago Fire Department station. Mills was quickly located after police used license plate reader data to link his vehicle to the crime, Newsweek reports.
Police searched his Evergreen Park home, and several loose 40-caliber bullets were found in his bedroom. The same caliber was used in the shooting. Investigators also found gunshot residue in Mills’ car.
Mills admitted to the shooting and causing “great bodily harm and imminent death,” per the Daily Mail.
The life story of Chicagoan Alton Mills shows why we need to pass the #FirstStepAct. Alton, who received a pardon from President Obama in 2015, was destined to spend his life in prison. He’s now a contributing member of society. #cjreform pic.twitter.com/QZxvYkmK6t
