There’s plenty of unrest around the globe, so how can you know which country is safe to visit? There’s no such thing as a nation that’s completely safe. But some have a better track record than others.
Who you are can play a role in your experience overseas. Some nations are safer for men than women. Others aren’t great for the LGBT+ community. And travel can be even more unpredictable for Black people.
The United States Ranks Poorly In Terms of Peace and Safety
Recently, several countries issued travel warnings for The United States, which is no surprise given the news-cycle.
USA Today cited the Global Peace Index (GPI) from 2022, which ranked the most peaceful nations in the world. The United States took 129th place, with Azerbaijan just ahead, and Brazil just below. Afghanistan came in dead last, as it has in the GPI for several years.
GPI explained, “civil unrest [in the United States] continues to be the primary driver of the deterioration.” This was in reference to social unrest and political terrorism.
Which Countries Are Safest For Travel?
Travelers Worldwide listed some of the safest countries, based on the findings of the GPI. A variety of factors are taken into consideration, including “crime, terrorism, political instability, weapons capabilities,” and more.
The publication wrote, “the Global Peace Index paints a pretty clear picture of the countries that pose the lowest risk level for travelers, but it’s not perfect. Recent conflicts and terrorism threats have knocked a few countries on the index out of their formerly-safe spots.”
1. Iceland
Alternatively known as “Land of Ice and Fire,” Iceland is top of the list. It’s safe, peaceful, and the Northern Lights are absolutely stunning. If those interest you, travel between September and April, when nights are long and dark. You can ski, snowboard and even climb glaciers.
2. New Zealand
Next, is New Zealand. Travelers Worldwide explained: “with a low-risk Level 1 with the U.S. Department of State, New Zealand is a haven for outdoor adventures and unique urban exploration opportunities for all types of travelers.”
3. Ireland
Third is Ireland, which has lush backdrops, castle ruins and a constantly evolving foodie scene. You’ll want to have your camera with you just about everywhere you go. For the city experience, head to Dublin. This is the home of popular attractions such as Dublin Castle and the Guinness Storehouse.
4. Austria
Coming in at number four is Austria. Travelers Worldwide wrote, “travelers enjoy coming in April and May for the best possible visit.” Take a boat trip along the Danube River, step back in time at the Schӧnbrunn Palace, and take in a performance at the Vienna Opera House. The U.S. Department of State advises those visiting Austria to “exercise normal precautions.”
5. Portugal
The fifth spot goes to Portugal. As Travel Noire has noted before, the Black expat community is growing, and you can learn about Black history in Lisbon thanks to the African Lisbon Tour. In the Algarve, the tasty food and the fabulous beaches are legendary, and some compare the coastal town of Comporta to the Hamptons. Keep an eye on your belongings and honor social norms, and you’ll be fine.
