Hurricane Dorian Now Upgraded to a Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane

Update 9/6/19 10:00 AM ET:

Dorian has made landfall in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, as a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds near 90 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.  Here is the latest advisory from NHC who is also no tracking Tropical Storm Gabrielle.

Dorian resulted in multiple tornadoes forming, has knocked out power for over 370,000 in the Carolinas and Virginia.  The death toll is currently at 30 with thousands still missing in the Bahamas.

“Literally hundreds, up to thousands, of people are still missing,” Joy Jibrilu, director general of the country’s tourism and aviation ministry, told CNN.

The storm is expected to move towards Nova Scotia this weekend.

 

Update 9/3/19 1:30 PM ET:

Hurricane Dorian is now moving away from the Bahamas after leaving in its wake a death toll of five.  The storm is moving toward the Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina Coasts. To see the current warnings you can view the current advisory here.

The Cajun Army is sending assistance to Savannah, Georgia and Wilmington, North Carolina along with search and rescue members from Mississippi that are heading to Florida where there are over 160 shelters open.

Update 9/1/19 1:30 PM ET:

Hurricane Dorian has made landfall in the Bahamas at the Abaco Islands as a 185 mph Category 5.  The storm is slowly moving so could last in the area and make its way to the Grand Bahama Islands over the next several hours leaving behind 30+ inches of rain. This is the strongest hurricane on record to ever hit the northern Bahamian islands.

Update 9/1/19 10 AM ET:

Hurricane Dorian has now been upgraded to the catastrophic level of a Category 5 Hurricane with winds measuring 160 mph.  The hurricane is said to be headed for the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas.  The following warnings and watches are active:

Southern and central Florida should continue to monitor Dorian as additional watches or warning may take effect for portions of the east coast of Florida today.

Update 8/31/19:

  • Category 4 Hurricane Dorian is now further away from Florida but could hit areas of Georgia but is expected to now make landfall in the Carolinas.  The hurricane’s center is said to be about five nautical miles, or about 5.75 miles.
  • Florida’s Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez is still urging residents to take caution and believes they are not completely in the clear yet stating “Yesterday, I signed an emergency declaration for Miami-Dade County… At this point, the declaration remains. We must keep our guard up.”

Original Story 8/29/19:

Hurricane Dorian is expected to reach Florida and the northern Bahamas this weekend and the National Hurricane Center has continued to increase their warnings.

What We Know:

  • The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued an advisory warning as Tropical Storm Dorian was upgraded to a hurricane. Their expecting its movement toward the northeast to continue through Friday. Through the weekend this movement will shift westward, moving the storm over the Atlantic approaching the Bahamas and to Florida on Saturday and Sunday; it is expected to make landfall on Monday. The hurricane is expected to produce rainfall that could cause flash floods and affect swells and surf around the US.
  • Dorian will reach Florida as a category 4 storm, the NHC said it expects a growth spurt over the weekend as the storm travels westward out of the Caribbean Sea. “There is an increasing likelihood of life-threatening storm surge along portions of the Florida east coast,” NHC said. Director of the NHC Ken Graham warned people it is not just a coastal storm, rather it will affect the entire state.
  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 26 counties in the hurricane’s path; He said he will delegate authority to those prepared to create “plans necessary to cope with the emergency,” and will seek assistance from any appropriate Government agencies. Though Dorian did not do much damage in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands as it passed through, it is expected to hit Florida and the Bahamas with harder rain and flash floods.
  • Dorian is expected to be the most powerful hurricane the east coast of Florida has seen in decades, though other parts of Florida have seen damage due to hurricanes in the past few years. Hurricane Michael was the first Category 5 hurricane to hit the US since 1992 last year, which affected the Gulf side of Florida. In 2017, Hurricane Irma hit the Florida Keys as a Category 4 storm.

Florida citizens are preparing as President Donald Trump declares that Florida is “going to be totally ready” for the storm, just as Puerto Rico was.
