Oh, OK THEN! The first look at Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers in Netflix’s upcoming rom-com, The Perfect Match, just dropped. And yeah, we’re gonna need to see this. Details inside…
Gabrielle Union faces a daunting question in her new romantic comedy, The Perfect Find: Would she risk it all for love?
Directed by Numa Perrier, the film follows fashion editor Jenna Jones (Gabrielle Union) as she returns to New York after a public breakup and career meltdown. She’s looking for a fresh start at Darzine, headed by her former rival Darcy Hill (Gina Torres), but the last thing she expects is to fall for her boss’s son, Eric (Keith Powers). With her career on the line and a forbidden romance at stake, Jenna must decide what truly matters to her.
But this isn’t just any rom-com. The Perfect Find is a modern take on Hollywood classics like Roman Holiday, Carmen Jones, and Mahogany, with dazzling outfits and daring production design.
Director Numa Perrier was drawn to the timeless dilemma of finding oneself after a setback, and she wanted to create a film that was both classic and fresh. The result is a movie that’s 100% romance, 100% comedy, and 100% raw sensuality.
Gabby’s performance is a departure from her previous work, as she explores a softer side of herself. But it’s her chemistry with Keith that really steals the show. According to Numa, the two had “electricity off the jump,” and their relationship is the heart of the film.
If you didn’t know, Gabrielle and rapper Saweetie are actually cousins. Not only that, Keith is Saweetie’s ex-boyfriend from high school. It’s a small world indeed. Maybe the “electricity” between them was due to their previous friendship via Saweetie.
The Perfect Find gave 50-year-old Gabby the chance to tell a story that was close to her heart—a story about the enduring value of women.
“[It] really sparked something inside of me about older women and how we can oftentimes disappear from society, almost, in terms of people looking at us as like we are past our prime. That we carry no value, that no one sees value in a woman over 28, much less over 35, much less over 40,” Gabby tells Vanity Fair.
“But baby, I’m thriving. So I wanted something that spoke to that that I hadn’t done before. Which is tough, because I’ve done a lot of rom-coms. This one is new. I’m thrilled.”
The supporting cast is equally impressive, with Gina Torres delivering a scene-stealing performance as Darcy Hill, and Aisha Hinds and La La Anthony shining as Jenna’s best friends. It’s def giving How Stella Got Her Groove Back vibes.
The Perfect Find is based on the 2016 novel by Tia Williams, and it premieres on Netflix on June 23rd.
Get ready for a roller coaster of emotions, as this rom-com promises to make you laugh, cry, and feel all the feels. “Rom-coms are back!” Numa declares. “This is the movie.”
