Salemburg, North Carolina teacher Michelle Lindsey for the first time in her 13-year-career was unable to buy extra supplies for her students — until her sisters helped her at her time of need.
What We Know:
- A teacher at Lakewood High School, Lindsey told Southern Living that “We are a very rural area. A great deal of my students cannot afford to get the supplies that they need to be successful in not only my classes, but all their classes…Not having the proper tools can start any student on the wrong path for the school year. Knowing this, each year I have purchased supplies for my students.”
- However, this year she was unable to do so and she was more than stressed about the situation. “It was weighing heavily on my soul,” she recalled. “I was a bundle of nerves, my mind constantly spinning—what I can do?”
- She decided to share her Amazon wishlist to her Delta Sigma Theta sisters on Facebook. “I posted in the group that I needed supplies in the Delta group, and it might had been 30 minutes and notifications started flooding my phone…Sisters that wanted to help me out. They read my post and it moved them…I was overwhelmed with tears and smiles and just pure joy.”
- Lindsey now has nearly 100 boxes of school supplies at her home. One of the Delta members that donated, Kimberly Warren Green (who happened to graduate from the high school Lindsey teaches at), told Good Morning America “That’s what we do. We help each other…”
