Supporting Black women-owned brands is good for everyone all year around, but especially during Women’s History Month.
Each year, citizens around the world celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The annual celebration marks a time for inspired action in accelerating women’s equality globally. There are a lot of different ways to support women-owned brands, especially those started by Black women. In honor of International Women’s Day, here are five Black women-owned brands to shop and support this month.
BEING FOR SKIN & SOUL
BEING FOR SKIN & SOUL is a Texas-based collection of natural, vegan and cruelty-free artisanal bath and body goods. Created by principal artisan, Kennedy Lowery, these self-care wellness products help people find calm in the chaos. Born of French Creole and West African ancestry, Lowery attributes her appreciation for the healing arts to her Louisiana roots.
Hand-made small batches come to life in her Houston studio, including the ultimate facial moisture solution, Radiance Incarnate Facial Serum. This brightening serum contains a combination of hydrating, moisturizing and rejuvenating oils. Revitalize your skin with ingredients, like evening primrose oil, frankincense essential oil and pomegranate oil to improve your face’s daily glow.
Mocktail Club
Mocktail Club offers a variety of flavorful non-alcoholic beverages to give your tastebuds another option besides soda and water. Pauline Idogho launched the health-focused company in 2018. It has since grown to four flavors inspired by Idogho’s cultural experiences around the world. Mocktail Club beverages are now available in select Whole Foods stores along with a growing list of independent retailers.
Ready-to-drink crafted non-alcoholic cocktail flavors, include Havana Twist, Manhattan Berry, Capri Spritz and Bombay Fire. If the health benefits from super fruits and prebiotics aren’t enough to get you to support this women-owned brand’s beverage, Mocktail club also donates 1 percent of all sales to charity. Water For People, the global charity of choice, provides free and clean drinking water across the world.
TERMINAL B
TERMINAL B is a luxury fragrance brand by husband-and-wife team Chris and Fay Breedlove. Passionate about all things international travel, aviation and passport stamps, the Breedloves wanted a way to bring a touch of abroad back home.
With four cities, 14 countries and five continents under their belt, the couple became inspired in 2020 to create TERMINAL B, a nod to their last name and LAX’s international terminal. Each blend reflects Chris and Fay’s lasting impression of the airport code and the corresponding city after which they are named. Their best-selling product, Buenos Aires, blends notes of black currant and amber. It is inspired by Argentina’s capital city.
Black Girl Vitamins
Keep your vitamin routine on schedule with the Complete Wellness Essentials set by Black Girl Vitamins. Black Girls Vitamins provides Black Women with unique nutrients and vitamins that generic brands tend to overlook. After the brand’s co-founder Maxine began learning more about the discrepancy Black women faced in finding and receiving healthcare, she decided to work with a team to address one section of the healthcare gap.
The all-around wellness kit includes a 30-day supply of probiotics, vitamin D, a hair/skin/nails vitamin and a choice of sea moss or once-a-day gummies. Black Girl Vitamins also help the next generation of Black women in healthcare with a $1 donation toward scholarships for every bottle the company sells.
EPIC Everyday
Co-founders Cara and Jenae are showing melanated young people what representation can look like through their inclusive line of products. A signature line of apparel, accessories and home goods, EPIC Everyday delivers positive and empowering fashion items from backpacks to carry all totes.
The brand designs products that “empower little ones to love their differences and embrace their unique, inherent style.” Their durable signature backpack is the perfect travel gift for a little one in your life.
