*Kerry Washington attended Sunday’s American Black Film Festival Honors wearing the velvet Marc Bouwer halter dress worn by Whitney Houston at the BET Walk of Fame Awards Gala in 1996.
“No lies told. Whitney Houston’s ACTUAL dress she wore. Sooooo incredibly special. #ABFFAwards here I come,” Washington captioned an Instagram video of herself lip-syncing to Houston’s hit song “I Have Nothing” in the archival style.
Washington’s stylist, Law Roach, also shared photos of Kerry wearing the gown on his Instagram. “And then THIS happened…Thank you @marcbouwer for letting me go into your archives and borrow Whitney’s dress for @kerrywashington,” Roach wrote.

In related news, Washington received the Excellence in the Arts Award at the 5th American Black Film Festival Honors held Sunday, March 5, at the 1 Hotel West Hollywood in West Hollywood, Calf. Additional honorees included Courtney B. Vance, who earned the Excellence in the Arts Award, the Industry Leadership Award went to Oscar Nominee Charles D. King, the Renaissance Award went to Grammy-nominated artist Janelle Monáe and writer/director Kasi Lemmons received the Classic Cinema Award.
Now in its fifth year, the ABFF Honors’ list of celebrated award recipients includes, Denzel Washington, Ava DuVernay, Regina King, Tiffany Haddish, Ryan Coogler, Don Cheadle, Will Packer, Queen Latifah, Lena Waithe, Terrence Howard, F. Gary Gray, Billy Dee Williams, Issa Rae, Omari Hardwick, Louis Gossett, Jr., the late Diahann Carroll and the cast of classic films and television shows including Martin, The Wire, Hollywood Shuffle and Love Jones, per a news release.
The ABFF Honors, per the news release, is a unique awards event as there are no winners or losers. Acclaimed artists are honored alongside rising stars, creating a spirit of mutual appreciation amongst multigenerational talent in Hollywood. The first ABFF Honors was held in 2016, honoring Black artists who have made significant contributions to American entertainment through their work as well as those who champion diversity and inclusion in Hollywood.
