*In the wake of the death of legendary soul man Chuck Jackson just days ago, Bettye Swann, another old-school soul singer has died. Unfortunately, we’re just now learning of her passing which came last month in Los Angeles on January 25  at the age of 78.

Although we don’t have the specific details, she was also afflicted with a spinal illness for over a decade, according to Soul Tracks.

Swann, a Louisiana native, first hit the scene in 1964 with a tune called “Don’t Wait Too Long.” That song, however, didn’t make much “noise” as they say in the music industry. But things changed several years later when she released “Make Me Yours.”

After “Make Me Yours,” over the next five years Swann landed hits with a pair of covers, “Don’t Touch Me,” and the Merle Haggard country classic “Today I Started Loving You Again.”

By the end of the 70s her music career had pretty much petered out and Swann, whose real name was Betty Jean Champion, became a school teacher in Nevada.
