The hip-hop series chronicles the rise of one of the industry’s most notorious rap groups. “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” was co-created by Wu-Tang’s own Rza, the founder of the group.

If you didn’t know, the members of Wu-Tang hail from New York and grew up during the crack epidemic. To avoid falling victim to their rough environment, RZA turned to rap to help change the lives of his family and friends. The Wu-Tang Clan consists of RZA’s two cousins and his childhood friends. One of which is U-God, whose real name is Lamont Jody Hawkins.

In the series, U-God is portrayed by Damani Sease. I spoke with Sease about his experience playing the hip-hop star, which is a dream role for the young actor.

“I realized after studying him and everything I’m just like him. I couldn’t ask for a better part to enter me into the industry,” said Sease.

It can be challenging for actors to portray real people. Having to tap into that person’s personality and mannerisms. To have similarities to the character must take off a little pressure from the actors, epically if it’s their first role, as Sease mentioned. His first industry job was as a stuntman for the show. Acting has been of dream of his since he was a kid. While working on the set, he was determined to land a speaking role and begin his Hollywood career.

“When we ended that shot I was in my trailer and I told myself in the mirror I would be back here,” said Sease. And he was right!

Sease has been on the show for the past two seasons. As the show enters its third and final season, I asked Sease what fans can expect as the Wu-Tang storyline concludes.

“This third season you can expect a lot of drama of course,” said Sease, noting that this season will take a deeper dive into each character’s personal lives.

The final season of “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” is now streaming on Hulu.
