*Simone Biles claims she “broke down” over the viral interview with her husband, Jonathan Owens, on the Pivot podcast last year, in which he bragged about being “the catch” in their relationship.
Owens also claimed he didn’t know who the decorated gymnast was before they started dating. His comments sparked online backlash, which Biles admitted took a serious toll on her mental health, Page Six reports.
“One night, I broke down, and I’m like, ‘Why are you guys talking about my husband like this?’” Simone, 27, shared in an April 16 Call Her Daddy podcast episode.
Biles previously expressed annoyance on X (Twitter), asking if folks were done debating her marriage to Owens: “Are y’all done yet?”
In December 2023, the NFL player said he was more of a “catch” than the seven-time Olympic champion.
“I always say that the men are the catch,” the former Green Bay Packers player said.
On Wednesday’s Call Her Daddy podcast episode, Biles explained that Owens “never said [she] wasn’t a catch.”
“He said he was a catch,” she exclaimed. “Because he is! I’ve never met a man like him.”
Biles said she left the Pivot podcast interview feeling positive, only to discover online criticism directed at her husband.
“I thought everything was OK, and then I go on Twitter and everybody’s like, ‘Divorce this man. He’s mean!’” Biles recalled. “I’m like, ‘He’s the sweetest. He praises the ground that I walk on.’ Truly, I’ve never met a man like him … he truly goes out of his way to do anything for me.”
Biles initially found the criticism “hilarious,” but “then it hurt my feelings,” she admitted.
“One night I broke down and I’m like, ‘Why are you guys talking about my husband like this? You don’t know him. You don’t know who he is and if anybody’s met him, you know he’s the sweetest guy, will do anything for anybody.’”
She continued, “That really hurt that they were talking about my husband like that. For me, it’s like, talk about me all you want, but don’t come for my family, never.”
Biles and Owens started dating in 2020 and tied the knot three years later.
