Italy, a long-standing dream destination for many, is now offering a unique opportunity through its newly launched digital nomad visa program. This new initiative will allow remote workers and self-employed individuals to experience the quintessential Italian lifestyle.
The Digital Nomad Visa
As of 4 April 2024, Italy has officially started accepting applications for its digital nomad visa. The visa allows remote workers and self-employed people to stay for up to one year, with the option to renew. It also permits the applicant’s family to join them, subject to approval from the Italian government.
Applicants must meet specific criteria to qualify for the digital nomad visa. The annual income requirement is $30,000 (€28,000). This amount is three times the level needed to qualify for healthcare cost exemption in Italy. They also need to have a place to stay planned ahead of time. Furthermore, candidates must not have a criminal conviction under five years old. The visa is administered under Article 27 of Italy’s immigration code and targets highly skilled professionals. Nevertheless, there are no strict educational qualifications.
Application Process
Applicants interested in the digital nomad visa need to book an in-person appointment at an Italian consulate in their country of residence. They must submit documentation, including a valid passport, proof of employment, and income. Health insurance, proof of accommodation in Italy, and a criminal record certificate are also required. If you are self-employed, you must additionally apply for an Italian VAT number.
Once approved, applicants have eight days from their arrival in Italy to apply for a residence permit, known as permesso di soggiorno. While the tax implications for digital nomads in Italy are still unclear, they may be required to contribute 5 percent income tax plus 23 percent towards social contributions. However, applicants should consult an Italian tax professional before applying for a visa.
Benefits and Opportunities
With the digital nomad visa, you can join a growing community of people who share your interests while enjoying Italy’s culture and beauty. Now more than ever, digital nomads can make Italy their home while pursuing their careers in exciting cities like Rome or soothing under-the-radar towns in regions like Tuscany.
