*The Pan African Film & Arts Festival (PAFF) continued with a special occasion on Thursday, February 15, at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of The Ja’Net DuBois Lifetime Achievement Award to actor and director Bill Duke, alongside the red carpet world premiere of the Ethiopian war film “For the Love of the Motherland.”
Four-time NBA Champion John Salley expressed deep admiration for Bill Duke’s remarkable career and his commitment to showcasing diverse narratives as both an actor and filmmaker. The event attracted many Hollywood notables, including Haitian actor Jimmy Jean-Louis, and casting director Robi Reed.
In response to what he enjoyed most about PAFF, Jimmy Jean-Louis shared, “Pan African Film Festival is one of those film festivals where, as a black person, you really have choices. It’s a good way to educate yourself, it’s a good way to see people who look like you, [and] stories that speak to you.”
The Ja’Net DuBois Lifetime Achievement Award, previously known as the Pan African Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Award, honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the arts, culture, and society. Named after the late “Good Times” actress and PAFF co-founder, this award celebrates a lifetime of creativity, innovation, and dedication to one’s craft.
Bill Duke’s successful career spans over 40 years, with memorable roles in iconic films such as “Predator,” “American Gigolo,” and “Menace II Society.” As a director, he has worked on numerous television shows and feature films, including the Cannes Film Festival official selection “A Rage in Harlem” and the acclaimed documentary “Dark Girls.”
During his acceptance speech, Bill Duke expressed his gratitude, stating, “I sincerely thank you from my soul, my heart. It’s been a privilege being in this industry. As you all know it has its ups and downs, ins and outs, but we have the privilege of actually working in something that we really have passion for doing.”
In addition to his artistic endeavors, Bill Duke is a committed humanitarian and philanthropist. Through initiatives like the Duke Media Foundation, he has worked tirelessly to empower youth by providing access to new media tools and financial literacy resources, ensuring they are equipped to thrive in today’s digital landscape.
The event served as a testament to Bill Duke’s enduring legacy and his impact on the entertainment industry. As PAFF continues to champion diversity, creativity, and excellence in filmmaking, honoring trailblazers like Bill Duke reinforces the festival’s mission to inspire and empower storytellers worldwide.
