As a travel writer based in Milan and with a penchant for discovering the lesser-known corners of vibrant cities, I enjoy making my way through Black Milan—a side of this iconic Italian city that often goes unnoticed by the conventional tourist trail.
Milan, renowned for its high fashion, historic architecture, and sumptuous cuisine, has a thriving Black culture scene. So, with that said, allow me to guide you through the alleys of flavor, fashion, and fabulousness that make up Black Milan.
Culinary Delights
Every good exploration should begin with good food. Black Milan has a burgeoning culinary scene that brings together flavors from the African diaspora with a dash of Italian influence. One good place to start is Baobab Restaurant, which serves West African specialties, including vegetarian options.
The chic, relaxed décor hinted at the lively flavors that await. From rice rolls stuffed with chicken, beef, carrots, and chives to fried plantain, every bite is a journey through diverse culinary traditions. Moreover, the fusion of Senegalese and other West African ingredients creates a unique gastronomic experience that will leave you craving more.
Style And Substance
With its ateliers that honor diversity in design, Black Milan elevates the already-iconic Milanese high fashion scene. Sansovino6, founded by American designer Edward Buchanan, is a high-end knitwear line to know. The brand’s signature iconic, comfy, fashionable pieces blend American sportswear with Italian high-tailoring.
Originating from Cleveland, Ohio, Buchanan offers a modern twist to the age-old craft of knitting. Furthermore, Buchanan’s designs have a minimalist aesthetic, understated sophistication, and clean lines. And, as Sansovino6 continues to gain recognition, its presence in Milan’s fashion landscape has become undeniable.
Afrocentric Hair Salons
No exploration of Black Milan would be complete without a visit to its Afrocentric hair salons. These salons serve the specific needs of Milan’s Black community. The versatile services provided by Texture Hair Salon—which welcomes clients from all walks of life—make it one of my favorite salons. Here, you will meet Nati and Sara, two young, talented hairstylists. As the proprietors, they manage the salon with an enthusiasm for new ideas and styles.
Moreover, the salon has top-notch products for hair maintenance and style in a warm and contemporary setting. Likewise, Texture Hair Salon offers a wide variety of hair care services. These include but are not limited to haircuts, blowouts, coloring, highlights, hair extensions, straightening, beard trims and shaves, and treatments. Like myself, many of Texture Hair Salon’s regulars rave about the stylists’ service, friendliness, and expertise. This salon is the perfect spot to rejuvenate your style and indulge in some self-care while in Milan.
