A pair of Perry films are already on the way to the streaming network, including the Kerry Washington-led historical drama, “Six Triple Eight.”
Get ready for more Tyler Perry on Netflix. The streaming channel has announced a first-look deal with the filmmaker-media mogul that will see him write, direct and produce feature films under a multi-year partnership.
According to a press release, the deal will include Perry’s upcoming movie, “Six Triple Eight,” which stars Kerry Washington, and the Kelly Rowland-led film, “Mea Culpa.” These, of course, are not Perry’s first collaborations there: He delivered “A Jazzman’s Blues,” “A Madea Homecoming” and “A Fall From Grace” to audiences via Netflix over the past few years.
As theGrio previously reported, “Six Triple Eight” is based on the real-life story of the only all-Black, all-female battalion in World War II. The story specifically follows these 855 women, who, after joining the war effort, were given the incredible task of sorting through and fixing a “three-year backlog of undelivered mail,” per the official description.
The film also includes a star-studded cast, with Washington appearing alongside Oprah Winfrey, Susan Sarandon and more.
Perry teased the project at last year’s theGrio Awards, telling us: “I am working on a movie right now. I went and visited a few women who have an incredible story. They’re all over 100 years old. And the stories they told me were just fascinating. I can’t wait to tell the story. So, that’s what’s going on there.”
“Mea Culpa,” which pairs Rowland with actor Trevante Rhodes (“Moonlight,” “Bird Box”), is a completely different story from “Six Triple Eight.” This drama centers on a criminal defense attorney “who takes on the case of an artist who may or may not have murdered his girlfriend.”
