*This is quite a complicated story. There are many stories behind the current story. Court documents reveal that comedy star Tiffany Haddish has demanded that an extortion lawsuit filed against her by her former friend Trizah Morris be moved to a private court, away from the public ears and eyes.
Tiffany claims she previously signed an agreement containing a confidentiality clause preventing Morris from discussing the case with the public.
The comedian said, “The confidentiality provision is broad, prohibiting disclosure of the Agreement, events leading to its signing, and the contents of the Agreement.”
She never stated when the agreement was signed.
Through her powerhouse attorney, Shawn Holley, Tiffany requested that the lawsuit be moved to arbitration. Well, for those unfamiliar with legal jargon, arbitration is when a private judge hears a case in the absence of a jury. Moreover, the case and hearings are private. Only the parties are present.
Morris had sued her ex-friend Haddish and comedian Aries Spears. But that was not the first lawsuit involving these parties. Morris’ two adult children had previously sued Haddish and Spears over sexually inappropriate skits they appeared in as children. The two adults said Haddish used to be a family friend but took advantage of their friendship to use them in the skits.
Part of the abuse included Spears acting like a pedophile around Morris’ young son. But Haddish and Spears denied the accusations and insisted they were innocent. They termed the allegations baseless.
Morris’ children eventually dismissed their lawsuit last year.
“My family and I have known Tiffany Haddish for many years – and we now know that she would never harm me or my brother or help anyone else do anything that could harm us,” they said. “We wish Tiffany the best and are glad that we can all put this behind us.”
But if Haddish and Spears imagined that was the end of the matter, they were wrong; Morris, the mother of the children, came forth and sued the two comedians, accusing them of defaming her when they defended themselves against her adult children’s lawsuit.
She specifically accused them of portraying her as an extortionist whose aim was to extract money from them.
During the previous case brought by Morris’ children, Haddish’s attorney had publicly said, “Plaintiff’s mother, Trizah Morris, has been trying to assert these bogus claims against Ms. Haddish for several years.”
“Every attorney who has initially taken on her case — and there were several — ultimately dropped the matter once it became clear that the claims were meritless and Ms. Haddish would not be shaken down,” the lawyer went on. “Now, Ms. Morris has her adult daughter representing herself in this lawsuit. The two of them will together face the consequences of pursuing this frivolous action.”
Morris claimed in her new case that she suffered damages and her reputation was ruined by the above statements.
