NeNe Leakes’ Former Landlord Demands $22k in Lawsuit

*NeNe Leakes is accused of failing to show up to court to deal with a lawsuit over her now-closed Swagg Boutique in Atlanta.

We reported previously that Leakes is being sued by a company called MPG-Sugarloaf for back rent but the reality star claims she is not responsible for the outstanding payments as her late husband signed the lease.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday, Aug. 15, in Fulton County, GA, seeking overdue rent from Leakes’ Swagg Boutique, MadameNoire reports. The plaintiff claims Leakes owes $22,900 in back rent for retail space she leased at the Sugarloaf Mills shopping center for her clothing store.

Leakes signed the lease contract in 2017 and four years later, she extended it for another year in 2021, according to the lawsuit. At some point, she defaulted on payments.

According to Radar Online, a letter sent to Leakes regarding the matter, dated July 19, 2023, read, “Based on the foregoing, landlord hereby demands payment in the amount of $22,900.75 within ten (10) days from receipt of this letter. Should you fail to pay this amount within ten (10) days from receipt of this letter, landlord will pursue all rights and remedies it has, including, but not limited to, the collection of past due rent, its reasonable attorney’s fees, and court costs pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 13-1-11, and the terms and conditions of the Lease.”

The landlord is pursuing the rent owed, attorney’s fees, and court costs.

When the Shade Room reported on the case, Leakes noted in the comments that her late husband, Gregg Leakes, handled the Swagg Boutique rent. She wrote, “Gregg signed the lease, not me! He ain’t here.”

Swagg Boutique shut down in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to newly filed documents obtained by RadarOnline.com, the plaintiff is seeking a default judgment against Leakes for failing to respond to the lawsuit by the September 18 deadline.

The landlord wants a “default judgment in the amount of $22,900.75 plus attorney fees of $2,315 and another $416 for court costs,” per RadarOnline.
