*More than 30 years after Milli Vanilli was exposed for lip-syncing their way to international stardom, a new self-titled documentary shines a new light on the scandal that shocked music lovers.
Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival in June, “Milli Vanilli” will tell the true story of German-French duo Robert “Rob” Pilatus and Fabrice “Fab” Morvan, two friends who went from unknown to superstar as the R&B group Milli Vanilli after the release of their 1989 debut album, “Girl You Know It’s True.”
The project contained a slew of hits, including the title track, “Baby Don’t Forget My Number,” “Blame It On the Rain” and “All Or Nothing.” The lead single, “Girl You Know It’s True” became a certified hit, selling more than 30 million copies around the world, noted Urban Hollywood 411.
With hit after hit, the “Girl You Know It’s True” album found its way to the top of the charts as it went six times platinum in the U.S. built on the album’s popularity with a successful run that brought the group Grammy recognition with the Best New Artist award in 1990.
Life was truly good at the time for Pilatus and Morvan. But it all came tumbling down once word got out that the duo never sang a single note on their album.
“We thought, ‘Okay it’s one song. You do that and you’re out,’” Morvan confessed in the trailer.
“This is run like a tight military operation. It’s on a need-to-know basis,” a music industry insider added about the lip sync scam.
The group’s downfall was a hard one that Morvan and Pilatus would not recover from after they were stripped of their Grammy. Despite efforts to make a comeback, Milli Vanilli never achieved its previous level of success. Pilatus was 32 years old when he died of a suspected drug overdose in 1998.
“Milli Vanilli,” will stream on Paramount+ starting Oct. 24 in the U.S. and Canada. On Oct. 25, the documentary will start streaming in the U.K., Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
