*(New York) – The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) will present the second edition of AAFCA Goes to Broadway on Monday, October 2nd, at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse in the heart of New York’s Theater District.
“Everything starts on Broadway, the original training ground for above and below-the-line talent in film and television. Broadway is where these individuals tirelessly hone their craft and deserve its superlative reputation as the ultimate talent pipeline,” says Gil Robertson IV, president and co-founder of AAFCA.
This year’s ceremony will shine the spotlight on director, producer, actor, and author Kenny Leon, who won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for A Raisin in the Sun; Tony Award-winning actress La Chanze; Obie Award-winning costume designer Toni Leslie James whose work will be seen in the upcoming Netflix film, Rustin; and theater impresario Jeffrey Richards, an eight-time Tony Award-winning Lead Producer of plays and musicals on Broadway.
“The work of these talented players illustrates how Broadway has served as a crucial training ground for numerous iconic figures. Their success offers a beacon of possibility for aspiring artists,” notes Robertson.
“It has motivated AAFCA to expand our annual calendar of events to celebrate how the theater community has enriched the art of storytelling and showcases performances that improve our understanding of the world,“ Robertson added.
This year’s ceremony follows the highly successful 2022 inaugural AAFCA Goes to Broadway that recognized the work of actress LaTanya Richardson Jackson as she made her directorial debut with August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson; esteemed television actor Wendell Pierce, who commanded SRO audiences playing the led in Arthur Mitchell’s Death of a Salesman; the creative team responsible for the reboot of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Top Dog/Underdog; veteran Broadway producer Irene Gandy; and Jordan Cooper, who made history as the youngest Broadway playwright with his play Ain’t No Mo.
AAFCA Goes to Broadway is produced by Turtle and the Hare Productions with support from Morgan Stanley Sports and Entertainment Wealth and Comcast/Xfinity’s The Black Experience.
