Customers in the U.S. with SNAP benefits, also known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs, will be able to use their benefits to buy groceries on Uber Eats, Complex reports.
“We know that online food delivery can have a meaningful impact in reducing barriers to fresh groceries, especially for the most vulnerable–including people living in food deserts, seniors, and those facing disabilities or transportation barriers,” a statement from the company read, per the Washington Examiner. “Helping to improve access to quality food is incredibly important to our work at Uber and we’re proud to use Uber’s technology and extensive local delivery networks to offer SNAP recipients the ability to use their benefits to access fresh groceries conveniently from our app in 2024.”
Uber has also announced it will support Managed Medicaid and Medicare Advantage plans by accepting Flexible Spending Account cards.
Meanwhile, Instacart is another food delivery service that allows users to pay via SNAP benefits online in all 50 states.
In a statement, the company said, “Expanding access to food is at the heart of our mission, and this achievement marks a crucial step towards ensuring that everyone has access to the affordable, nutritious food they need to thrive.”
“Through our retail partnerships, Instacart now reaches nearly 95% of U.S. households enrolled in SNAP,” the statement continued.
“We’re resolute in our commitment to create a world where everyone has access to the food they love. We believe that achieving nutrition security is a collective effort, and we are proud to work closely with public and private partners to better serve our communities,” the company said.
