*Tiffany Haddish is known for serving laughs to fans who watch her live, on TV, or at the local movie theater. But the comedienne was the one served recently as she received legal papers related to a $1 million defamation lawsuit during a comedy show.
Citing court documents obtained by Radar Online, The Blast reports that Haddish was hosting the show, which took place at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood on August 28, 2023. Around 6:45 pm that day, legal papers were served to the “Girls Trip” star or her representative. The serving opens the door for Haddish’s former friend Trizah Morris to proceed with her lawsuit against the “Girls Trip” star and fellow comedian Aries Spears.
Morris’ lawsuit stems from allegations from her about damaging, slanderous statements and comments Haddish, Spears, and their representatives made that labeled Morris as an extortionist. The mother of two claims the comments adversely affected her reputation, resulting in online accusations of her being a con artist.
In February, Morris contacted Haddish’s lawyer, requesting a statement refuting the extortion allegations. According to The Blast, Haddish allegedly called Morris on March 7, 2023, with a promise to address the extortion issue if it came up during her upcoming press tour.
“The media isn’t talking about it right now,” the funnywoman said. “I have four movies coming out this year and I am going to be doing a lot of press. If it comes up, I’ll be sure to mention it.”
Despite her alleged promise, Morris later discovered that Haddish spoke negatively about her in an interview during the press tour. Soon after, Morris filed the defamation suit, seeking $1 million in damages from Haddish and Spears, due to the resulting harm she suffered from the duo’s comments.
Morris’ lawsuit is the latest in a series of happenings surrounding her and Haddish, which go back to 2014. Morris’ suit accuses the entertainer and Spears of grooming her children and having them participate in sexually inappropriate skits filmed in 2014. Among the skits was one where Morris’ daughter simulated oral sex and another involving a pedophile skit with Morris’ son.
Prior to the legal drama, Morris and Haddish had a close friendship from 2011 to 2020. In her filing, Morris revealed she had no relationship with Spears.
As she and Haddish, they were so close that Haddish was like family to Morris’ children. So much so that she was affectionally called “Auntie Tiff” by the children.
The children, who later filed a lawsuit against Haddish alleging child sexual abuse, dropped their legal action in 2022. Haddish and Spears denied any wrongdoing and labeled the children’s lawsuit an extortion attempt, The Blast noted.
“My family and I have known Tiffany Haddish for many years – and we now know that she would never harm me or my brother or help anyone else do anything that could harm us,” Morris’ daughter said. “We wish Tiffany the best and are glad that we can all put this behind us.”
Although the children’s lawsuit was dropped, Haddish still found herself under fire by Morris. The matriarch filed her defamation lawsuit after her children filed their suit. Haddish’s lawyer responded to Morris’ claims, revealing her attempts to assert baseless claims against his client “for several years.”
“Every attorney who has initially taken on her case — and there were several — ultimately dropped the matter once it became clear that the claims were meritless and Ms. Haddish would not be shaken down,” the lawyer stated. “Now, Ms. Morris has her adult daughter representing herself in this lawsuit. The two of them will together face the consequences of pursuing this frivolous action.”
