An Interview with Dunnie O, the Resilient Artist

*Some artists draw inspiration from the depths of their experiences, channeling emotions and life’s twists into breathtaking masterpieces. Dunnie O, a Nigerian-American artist who moved back to Maryland from Los Angeles, following a traumatic experience, exemplifies the journey of transformation and overcoming adversity. I had the privilege of sitting down with Dunnie O to dive into her remarkable story, her growing artistic career, and her role as a passionate art educator.

Dunnie O’s path to becoming a prominent artist in the DMV is a true testament to her faith. Her journey took a turn when heartbreak led her back home to Maryland in 2018. In the midst of healing, she reignited her love of art; asking God to lead her path and give her a year to prove to herself that she is truly walking in her calling. Through each paint stroke and completed canvas, she found a means of self-expression and healing that transcended what she could’ve imagined for herself.

“I use glass, crushed glass, broken glass in a lot of my pieces…I use it as a visual reminder that beauty can still come from brokenness,” said Dunnie.

Fast forward to 2023, and Dunnie O’s artistry has reached new heights. Her talents were recognized by the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, where she was invited to teach Summer classes this year. This remarkable opportunity allowed her to share her artistic journey and passion with a wider audience, further solidifying her place in the art world.

Check out my interview below with Dunnie O, and be inspired by her resilient spirit, bright smile, and infectious energy.

“This year I’ve officially now become hired as faculty [at the Vis Arts Center]… so I’m teaching my first big group, private event here [this] month, and then I’ll be working with the education department to build out regular course offerings,” said Dunnie, when asked what she’s up to next.

Dunnie O has found a home as a faculty artist, teaching classes at the Vis Arts Center in Rockville, Maryland.

You can also find her on Instagram at @DunnieTheArtist, where she shares her latest creations, artistic process, and snippets of her journey.

Her website, dunnietheartist.com, serves as a digital canvas where her art comes to life and connects with art enthusiasts worldwide.

Dunnie O’s story is a testament to the transformative power of art and the resilience of the human spirit. Her ability to channel her emotions and life experiences into artistry has not only propelled her own success but has also touched the lives of those she teaches and inspires (like me). As she continues to create and uplift others, Dunnie O stands as a shining example of the boundless possibilities that can arise from embracing one’s journey and creative passion.
