*A lackluster “Blue Beetle” and repulsive “Strays” add little, content-wise, to the new films at the box office. “The Blue Beetle” is DC Comics second major release this year. Of the supermen in comics, “Spiderman” seemingly is the only one affected by a bite.

The Scarab beetle attaches itself to its host, Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) in “The Blue Beetle.” And that’s where the excitement begins and ends.

Reyes is a college grad returning home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when he unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab chooses Reyes to be its symbiotic host, he is involuntarily fitted up with a suit of armor. The protective sheathing is capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers.

Sounds familiar? Yes, it is. However, this iteration lacks the verve and imagination to make it soar above its predecessors. And the preachy motif also drags it down.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, “Blue Beetle” also stars Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Becky G, and Bruna Marquezine.

“Strays” can be summed up in a few words: humping, excrement, urination, F-bombs.

More mind-blowing than the fact a studio would greenlight trash like this is the fact that Jamie Foxx (Bug), an Oscar® winner, would agree to be a part of this vile, inferior movie.  If the dogs are not humping, or urinating on other dogs, they are dumping large amounts of feces on the floor.

In addition to the offensive behavior of the dogs, the sight of massive amounts of waste matter being released by the dogs in sync, there is the vomit. Moviegoers must endure watching a dog eat puke. Viewers’ ears are also under attack. Bug is seemingly in a contest to drop more F-bombs than Samuel L. Jackson. If this isn’t enough, “Strays” is not funny.

Reggie (Will Ferrell) is abandoned by his owner Doug (Will Forte). He ends up on the streets with Bug, Maggie (Isla Fisher), and Hunter (Randall Park). They help Reggie get revenge by biting off Doug’s penis.

Directed by Josh Greenbaum, “Strays” also stars Josh Gad, Brett Gelman, and Harvey Guillén.
