You can never truly prepare yourself to open up a Zoom link on your computer and have a ten minute banter with two of Hollywood’s funniest guys, but that’s what happened when comedian and producer extraordinaire, Chris Spencer (Real Husbands of Hollywood, Grown-ish, The Undershepherd) and hysterically renown funnyman, Faizon Love (Couples Retreat, Friday, Elf) appear on screen!
Spencer and Love are gearing up for the premiere of their movie, Back On the Strip, and they discussed the nuances of shooting a film starring some of the most talented comedians and actors in the industry – Wesley Snipes (“Blade,” “Coming 2 America,” “New Jack City”), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip, Like A Boss), Bill Bellamy (House Party, Meet The Browns), and Gary Owen (Dotty & Soul, Think Like A Man) to name a few. The film surrounds a young Merlin (played by Spence Moore II) who moves to Las Vegas to pursue life as a magician when he gets hired as the front-man of a notorious male stripper group, the Chocolate Chips.
We started our conversation by confirming that Back On the Strip is indeed Spencer’s feature film directorial debut.
“Yes, I’ve done videos, commercials, game shows, um, soft porn, but this is the first actual feature,”he joked. “The soft porn was like thirty minute, forty-five minutes, but this is the first feature.”
If you’ve watched any number of comedic shows over the last decade or more, it’s easy to note that much of the talent has worked together in past projects. Spencer has worked with many of them on The Real Husbands of Hollywood.
“The only one that was a little difficult was Wesley,” he admitted. “I was a little intimidated the first day, like I would direct around him.” Love also weighed in on working with Snipes.
“You guys seen Blade, but he’s so much more than that. He’s so…he just delivers gold. And it’s with every little nuance, it’s just gold,” he stated.
Back on the Strip is a feel-good story that hits theaters August 18, 2023.
