*If it’s one thing you can count on from Black people, we know how to laugh in the midst of a bad situation (like the “Montgomery Brawl”). Give us a cloud and we see God’s face in it. Give us rain and we look for the rainbow. Give us lemons, we make lemonade. Close one door, and we search for the open door.
For our own mental health, that’s a good thing. Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying. But when you get used to injustices – and react to it in predictable ways – it does nothing to force change.
After videos of the Montgomery Brawl were released, Black people wasted no time putting their creativity to work with all their versions of videos and memes, commemorative t-shirts, and collector items in support of the people who jumped in when those White people jumped on the Black co-captain of the Harriot II riverboat who was just doing his job.
Reggie Ray, the Black man who used a folding chair as a weapon in the melee, has been charged with disorderly conduct.
Now there’s a GoFundMe to raise money for his legal bills. Click the video for more details.
