Destination Diaries: Spend Three Days in Vienna, Austria – Travel Noire

Located in the heart of Europe, Vienna, Austria is a city that effortlessly combines history, art, music and grand architecture. Vienna travel offers visitors a myriad of cultural experiences that leave a lasting impression. 

In January, Lagos-based travel influencer Zim enjoyed several days in the Austrian capital. She explored the city’s history, food and culture. She stayed at Do & Co, a hotel offering unbeatable views of St. Stephens Cathedral. After having visited, she says it is officially her favorite European city. 

“Vienna is a very underrated travel destination,” Zim shares. “I feel not a lot of people actually really know how beautiful of a city it is. There is so much to do ranging from architectural buildings to speakeasy bars to amazing restaurants. I love everything about it! The people, the activities, the nightlife and the food.”

Some of the local foods she enjoyed were goulash, apfelstudel and wiener schnitzel. If you’re planning to visit Vienna soon, utilize this 3-day itinerary to help you explore some of the city’s top sites and immerse yourself in the local culture. 

Day 1

On the first day, check out the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien. This impressive art museum houses a vast collection of works by renowned artists, like Rembrandt and Vermeer. It also has a large collection of ancient artifacts. The building itself also is worth admiring with its ornate facade and grand interior.

On yout journey, visit Karlskirche. It is a beautiful baroque church located in the heart of Vienna. Karlskirche features stunning architecture and intricate frescoes. It was built in the 18th century to celebrate the city’s emergence from black plague that claimed the lives of many in Vienna.

Then, you should visit the Palace of Justice. This majestic building was once the residence of Emperor Franz Joseph II and is now home to the Austrian Supreme Court. Visitors can admire its impressive architecture and luxe interior.

The area of Vienna known as the “Bermuda Triangle” is considered one of the best areas for nightlife in the city. Located in the city center, this energetic area offers a wide range of bars, clubs, restaurants and late-night venues, including those with live music or DJs spinning various genres.

Day 2

On your second day, try visiting the UNESCO world heritage site Schonbrunn Palace. It was once the summer residence of the Habsburg monarchs. Explore the palace’s opulent rooms and extensive gardens, and enjoy stunning views of the city.

For a look into some history, check out the Austrian National Library. The Austrian National Library is one of the most important libraries in all of Europe. It houses a vast collection of books, manuscripts and historical documents. Visitors can admire the library’s stunning beauty and browse its impressive collection.

Belvedere Palace is a magnificent palace and amazing Vienna travel location. It features two baroque palaces surrounded by stunning gardens. It’s home to a world-renowned art museum with works by Gustav Klimt and other famous artists.

The Naschmarkt is one of the best local food markets in Vienna. It offers a diverse selection of food from both Austria and around the world. There are over 100 food vendors selling fresh produce, meats, cheeses and seafood. They also sell spices, sweets and baked goods. Here, you also can enjoy a range of culinary delights from around the world with numerous food stalls offering international cuisines, such as Turkish, Thai, and Indian food.

Day 3

During your third Vienna travel day, visit Palais Kinsky. This impressive palace was once home to the Kinsky family and now houses a private art collection. Visitors can admire its design and enjoy a range of art exhibitions.

The iconic symbol of Vienna, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, is a must-visit experience during your stay. It is a towering Gothic masterpiece that dates back to the 12th century. Explore the cathedral’s interior, including its intricately designed roof and enjoy stunning views of the city from the top of the tower.

Vienna’s city center is a bustling hub of activity and a great place to spend hours exploring on foot. It’s a great place to take in the city’s vibrant atmosphere, shop for souvenirs and try some traditional Viennese cuisine. Vienna is known for its culinary scene, so be sure to indulge in local dishes and don’t miss tasting the famous Viennese coffee and pastries at traditional coffee houses.

If you have more time to spend in Europe, Zim recommends combining your Vienna trip with a visit to Budapest and/or Slovakia. She also recommends getting the Wiener Linien weekly travel pass, as it allows you to use the buses and trains all across the city.
