*Radio personality Ebro Darden denies walking back his accusations of Drake lacking social activism while adding more context to his original comment.

During a recent episode of Apple Music’s Rap Life Review, Darden called out Drake for speaking against Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” in his It’s All A Blur Tour stage setup, claiming Drake has never shown public support of Black issues throughout his career.

While Ebro explained that Drake doesn’t have to speak up in his music, he took issue with Drizzy taking shots at Childish Gambino’s (aka Donald Glover’s) 2018 track when the song actually had a message and social justice impact, reports hiphopdx.com.

“Drake doesn’t have to,” Darden has since clarified in a July 17 tweet. “Nor should he if he doesn’t feel it. But to say ‘This is America’ is overrated and over awarded when that song came at a time when people needed someone to say something. And he doesn’t feel the need to. That’s all.”

In response to a tweet in agreement, Ebro added: “I was responding to Drake saying ‘This is America’ is overrated and over-awarded. That song made people feel something at an important moment. And to slam that song when you never say anything is wack to me.”

In another tweet, Ebro shared: “Watch the full clip on Youtube… Drake doesn’t have to say shit. But if we talking about ‘This is America’ then he rarely says anything significant about social issues and Gambino did.”

Earlier this year, Childish Gambino admitted that “This Is America’ started out as a joke diss toward Drake.

“I had the idea three years before,” Glover explained. “I told [director] Hiro [Murai] the idea, and he’s like, ‘I really want to do that.’ The idea for the song started as a joke. To be completely honest, ‘This is America’ — that was all we had was that line. It started as a Drake diss, to be honest, as like a funny way of doing it. But then I was like, this shit sounds kind of hard though. So I was like, let me play with it.”

Drake responded via a set piece on his It’s All A Blur Tour while performing his song, “Headlines.” One of the headlines on an onstage ticker reads: “The Overrated And Over Awarded Hit Song ‘This Is America’ Was Originally A Drake Diss Record.”

According to hiphopdx, Ebro’s original comment about Drake’s lack of public involvement in social justice issues came from a conversation surrounding the headline in question on Drake’s tour.

“Drake, who has never shown up, and y’all know I’m the biggest Drake fan on this show,” Ebro said. “Drake has never shown up to have anything to say about anything going on in society with Black folks or anything other than himself. So now you have an issue — I get you have an issue with Childish Gambino if what you’re saying is face — but fam, the song was supposed to be a joke diss, it didn’t actually happen. So why you in your feelings?”
