Former Olympic track star John Carlos is opening up about the rise in Black men being incarcerated in this exclusive clip from this week’s episode of the Apple TV+ series Swagger.
In the clip, Carlos breaks down some stark truths about the prison industrial complex, including the startling fact that there are more Black people behind bars than there were enslaved before the Civil War. As he said in the clip, “The prison system has become the new plantation.”
Swagger stars O’Shea Jackson Jr., Quvenzhané Wallis, Isaiah Hill, Shinelle Azoroh, Tristan Mack Wilds, Caleel Harris, Tessa Ferrer, James Bingham, Solomon Irama, Ozie Nzeribe, Jason Rivera, Christina Jackson and Sean Baker. Orlando Jones and Shannon Brown are new additions to the cast in Season 2.
The series is inspired by NBA star Kevin Durant’s own experiences in youth basketball and takes a look at the world of elite youth basketball clubs and the people that make up the organizations–the players, coaches and families. As the description describes it, the human element of these clubs becomes “the game within the game.”
New episodes of Swagger will air on Apple TV+ weekly on Thursdays through Aug. 11.
