*Former Memphis police officer Mark LeSure, who criticized the police involved in the killing of Tyre Nichols, was found dead in his driveway Sunday.
LeSure was a retired Memphis police officer and military veteran who had been outspoken about the police officers accused of murdering Nichols. He was found dead at his home on July 9, according to local news reports. Days later, a woman was arrested for robbing him as the lay unresponsive in the driveway.
As Newsone reports, a viral tweet posted late Monday night identified LeSure as “a whistleblower” who was featured “on the news several times and very outspoken about the Memphis police force and their handling of the Tyre Nicholes [sic] incident.”
There is no reported evidence of foul play in LeSure’s death, according to Newsone. A woman seen on surveillance video stealing from LeSure as he seemingly lay dead in his driveway has been arrested, ABC 24 reports. Shuntae Daniels was charged with aggravated burglary, two counts of theft of property in the amount of $1,000 to $2,500, and theft of identity.
According to an affidavit, the surveillance video showed Daniels arriving with LeSure at his home before he collapsed in the driveway. That’s when she ran into the house to grab a second phone. Daniels is seen on video making a call and saying, “We are going to see who knows the law.”
The affidavit said investigators launched a search for Daniels but she ultimately turned up at the Homicide office to give a statement.
Here’s more from ABC 24 in Memphis:
In her statement, Daniels said she and Lesure had an argument when she arrived at his house, and she demanded that he give her gas money, the affidavit said. Daniels then told investigators that Lesure went inside his home, and when he was walking out with $10 in his hand, he collapsed in the driveway, the affidavit said.
Daniels then told investigators that she went inside Lesure’s home and stole his Samsung cellphone and his wallet, which had $100 in it, the affidavit said. She then left out of the home, and walked over to Lesure’s body, went through his pockets, and took the $10 that was laying on the grouind, the affidavit said.
According to the affidavit, Daniels transferred $1,500 to herself from LeSure’s phone and went on a shopping spree.
Daniels is being held on a $100,000 bond.
