*Sgt. Major Keith L. Craig rises to meteoric success in the film industry after a highly decorated career in the military. Mr. Craig aka “Sgt. Major” is a man who lives without limits. In Wiesbaden, Germany, he was a combat soldier and an Intelligence and Logistics Non-Commissioned Officer. He interfaced with talent and studio executives who were contracted to entertain the troops. Sgt. Major Craig encouraged a diversified line-up that was inclusive of performers of color.
Sgt. Major moved up the ranks to become Senior Advisor to the Commander of Europe, Southwest Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. He proved to be an invaluable intermediary between Hollywood studios and the military. Sgt. Major was key in executing special screenings of blockbuster studio hits for our troops worldwide. One such studio was Disney. It was a foreshadowing of his post-military career.
EURweb’s LaRita Shelby had the pleasure of speaking with Sgt. Major Craig about his segue into Hollywood’s elite executive suite.
Sgt. Major Keith L. Craig: “I was very fortunate to work at the number one entertainment studio in the world for the last eight years. That was Walt Disney Studios and Motion Pictures. I was fortunate to be one of the film distributors and one of the chosen ones that was actually part of discussing contracts and things of that nature, to make sure that box office grosses went through the walls and that we were able to maximize the theatrical releases.”
Today Sgt. Major Craig has achieved over $42 billion in box office and streaming revenue. He and his team packaged and promoted The Last Jedi, Captain Marvel, The Lion King, Black Panther, and many more.
Sgt. Major Keith L. Craig: “When in history has there been a Black director with an all-Black cast movie, with a 100 million dollar plus budget that’s actually been made and then distributed?”
When asked to demystify the role of the studio executive, Sgt. Major Craig provided details of a one-quadrant movie versus a two, three, or four-quadrant movie. He notes that creatives are driven by inspiration, but for the executive, it has to be much more.
Sgt. Major Keith L. Craig: “You definitely have to make sure that when you are an executive, you have to choose the right script. Then put all of those factors of the equation into your mindset when thinking about what film you’re going to greenlight. At the end of the day, it’s about the bottom line.”
Dedication, vision, and a proven track record made for the perfect partnership between Sgt. Major Craig and Jeff Porter, who went on to form their own company.
Porter + Craig Film and Media Distribution was founded in 2021. Their annual slate of 50- 100 films will be seen on Amazon, Apple, Roku, Google Play, Vudo, and in selected theatres. Global distribution is also included in Porter + Craig’s forecast of worldwide dominance in entertainment and content creation.
Sgt. Major Craig has been called the “Hollywood Whisperer.” However, his box office track record speaks loudly as an Executive Producer, Consultant, and Investor.
Craig is also the author of Serving to Lead: Lessons in Adversity and Resilience from the Battlefield, Gridiron, and the Corporate World.
